Why perform a Urinalysis or Blood Test?

Urinalysis is a valuable diagnostic tool that helps us detect early signs of conditions such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease and diabetes. Itโ€™s especially useful for pets on long-term medication who require regular monitoring, and it can be a practical alternative for those who wonโ€™t tolerate blood testing. Blood testing is often required to make a definitive diagnosis and to better interpret presenting symptoms. Blood testing is also required to accuratley monitor chronic illness or treatments.

How Sample Collection Works:

Urine Samples-

In most cases we ask owners to collect the urine sample themselves. This is usually the least stressful option for pets and allows us to get the sample to the lab promptly. Itโ€™s easy to do.

– For dogs, you can collect a sample during a walk using a clean container or ladle.
– For cats, you may need to use non-absorbent cat litter designed to make urine collection easy and hygienic.

If urinalysis is recommended during a home visit, such as during a vaccination appointment, we can send you a urine collection kit afterwards with full instructions. Alternatively, if youโ€™ve already collected a urine sample before your appointment, or your pet is calm and easy to handle, the vet may collect the sample during the visit.

Blood Samples-

Blood sampling is carried out by the veterinarian. Some assistance will be required by a nominated person during the sample collection.ย  Blood sampling can only beย carried out successfully on calmย  and compliant patients.

After collection, blood & urine samples are sent directly to IDEXX laboritories. Your vet will review the results and call you personally to talk through the findings and any next steps. This process usually takes 2-3 days.
