The Importance of Annual Health Check & Vaccinations for Dogs, Cats and Rabbits.

Welcome to our advice and information on annual vaccination and health check requirements for cat, dogs, and rabbits in the United Kingdom. At Vets 2 Your Pets, we understand the importance of preventive care in keeping your beloved pets healthy and happy. Regular vaccinations and health checks play a vital role in safeguarding their well-being and protecting them from various diseases. Read on to discover why annual vaccinations and health checks are essential for your furry friends.

Annual Vaccinations Cats, Dogs and Rabbits:

Annual vaccinations are crucial in preventing infectious diseases that can be harmful or even fatal to your pets. Here are some key points to consider:

Cats: Vaccinations for cats include core vaccines to protect against feline panleukopenia, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus and feline leukaemia virus. Rabies vaccinations are required for cats that travel abroad. These vaccines prevent serious illnesses and ensure your feline companion’s longevity. Cats are vaccinated from 8 weeks of age, and then annually, to protect them against disease challenge that they will encounter. Cats can explore large distances away from home and encounter neighbours’ cats and stray cats. Feline flu is passed on through cat sneezes and droplets, while feline leukaemia and rabies is contracted from a cat bite. Vaccination is the only and most effective way to prevent and or stop disease transmission.

Dogs: Core vaccinations for dogs protect against the diseases distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, canine hepatitis, canine parainfluenza and leptospirosis. Leptospirosis is a serious and debilitating disease that can be fatal if not treated promptly. Leptospirosis is endemic across the UK and it is essential to ensure year round active immunity against this disease. An annual vaccination against Kennel Cough (Bordetella Bronchiseptica) is optional but recommended – this may also be a requisite of boarding your dog in kennels or day care.  Rabies vaccinations are required for all dogs that travel abroad.  Vaccinations for dogs commence as early at 6 weeks of age and portions are required to be repeated annually, while some portions are repeated every 3 years. We manage your vaccine program to ensure your dog is only vaccinated annually with the absolute requirements for complete protection, so as not to over vaccinate your pet.

Rabbits: Rabbits are susceptible to certain diseases, including myxomatosis and rabbit viral haemorrhagic diarrhoea (VHD). Myxomatosis is a viral disease contracted from mosquitoes biting your rabbit. Unfortunately there is no treatment for this devastating disease and if clinical symptoms develop, it is always fatal. Annual vaccination against rabbit Myxomatosis is therefore essential in the UK as preventing mosquito bites can never be guaranteed. Myxomatosis and VHD are vaccinated together as a single injection from 6 week of age and are required to be repeated annually to maintain effective immunity.

Health Checks:

Annual health checks are an essential part of responsible pet ownership. Regular visits to your veterinarian allow for early detection and prevention of potential health issues. Here’s why health checks are crucial:

Comprehensive Examination: During a health check, our veterinarian will conduct a thorough examination of your pet, checking for any signs of illness, abnormalities, or discomfort. This includes assessing their weight, dental health, coat condition, and overall physical well-being.

Early Disease Detection: Some health conditions can be challenging to identify without professional expertise. Regular health checks increase the chances of detecting underlying health problems in their early stages, when treatment is often more effective.

Tailored Advice: Your veterinarian will provide personalized advice on nutrition, exercise, parasite control, dental care, and other aspects of your pet’s well-being. They can address any concerns you may have and provide guidance on optimizing your pet’s health and happiness.

Preventive Measures: Health checks allow for preventive measures such as parasite control, dental cleanings, and weight management. These proactive steps can significantly improve your pet’s quality of life, longevity and reduce the risk of serious health issues.

Remember, annual vaccinations and health checks are vital for the overall well-being of your cat, dog, or rabbit. By staying up-to-date with these requirements you can ensure your furry friends live a long, healthy life.
