Blood tests at home

We all know how tricky it can be to get your furry friend to the vet sometimes. Maybe your dog shakes in the car, or your cat disappears the moment you open the carrier. Or maybe it is just a hassle: no transport, mobility issues, juggling kids, or trying to keep your pet calm in a busy waiting room. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.

This is one reason we started Vets 2 Your Pets: to make vet care easier and kinder for pets and their people. As part of the care we provide, we can carry out blood tests for cats and dogs in the comfort of your own home. Blood tests are often recommended to check for early signs of illness, monitor long-term conditions such as kidney or liver disease, track thyroid levels, or establish a baseline before starting or while continuing medication.

Thanks to our partnership with IDEXX Laboratories, one of the United Kingdom’s top veterinary diagnostic labs, we will come to you to collect blood samples from your pet and send them off for analysis. Once results are back, your vet will call you personally to discuss what was found and make a forward plan for your pet.

Why At-Home Vet Care Really Helps
For many pet owners, getting to a vet clinic is more than just inconvenient. It can be downright difficult. We regularly support people who have mobility or transport challenges, those managing anxiety (whether it belongs to them or their pet), people caring for elderly pets who do not handle travel well, or families living in rural areas far from a vet. In addition, sometimes you simply want a calmer and more personal experience for your pet.

What Can Blood Tests Tell Us?
Blood tests act as a health window for your pet. They can spot early signs of illness before anything obvious shows up, keep an eye on long-term conditions such as kidney or liver disease, check thyroid levels (especially important for older cats), or provide a baseline if your pet is on medication.

How Does It Work?
It is straightforward. First, we check if your pet is a good fit. They should be calm enough for us to safely collect the sample and ideally already an existing patient or referred by your usual vet. Somebody who is willing to hold them still for the sample to be taken will need to be present. Once they are booked in, we will send you a short video to show you how to hold your pet for the sample to be taken.

Sometimes, for especially shy cats, we might suggest a mild calming medication such as gabapentin beforehand. Once the sample has been taken, we securely send it off to IDEXX Laboratories. When the results are back, your vet will give you a call to explain everything and discuss next steps. Results are usually available within two to three days.

What About Cost?
Here is a quick rundown:

  • Initial home visit consultation: £166.50
  • Blood sample collection fee: £65
  • Lab test fee: varies depending on the specific test panel

We will keep you informed every step of the way.

Is This Service Right for Your Pet?
At-home blood testing works best for calm, cooperative pets who do not like car rides or vet clinics. It is also a great option for pets with chronic conditions and older pets needing regular health checks. However, if your pet is very reactive or unsafe to handle at home, this might not be the best choice.

We offer a wide range of tests, including wellness blood panels, kidney and liver monitoring, senior profiles, thyroid checks for cats, and more. Your vet will help decide what is right for your pet.

Vets 2 Your Pets believe great vet care should come to you, not the other way around. Offering blood tests at home means less stress for pets and their owners, as well as more flexible and compassionate care. We want to meet you where you are, both literally and figuratively.

If you are curious, want to check if your pet is eligible, or would like more information, just reach out. We would love to hear from you.
